Inclement Weather

THE FAMILY YMCA INCLEMENT WEATHER PLAN
The Y will make every effort to stay open in the event of inclement weather; however, keeping in mind the safety of our employees, there may be times that we need to delay opening or even close our facility. Any closures/delays will be announced as a pop up on our homepage (https://laymca.org/) and on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/TheFamilyYMCALosAlamosNM).

In the event of a Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) delay, closure, or early dismissal we will adhere to the following:

LAPS SCHOOL CLOSURE

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS & CAMPS

  • If school is cancelled before it starts, or at any time throughout the school day, there WILL BE NO After-School (A/S) program. If school remains open until its regular time but LANL is released early, the program will remain open for 1-hour after LANL’s closure. Please make every effort to pick up your child as soon as possible to ensure that your family and Y staff can get home safely.
  • If LANL is dismissed early but after the school day ends, parents should pick up children as soon as is safely possible at the A/S program.
  • If the Y closes on a Day Camp Day, there will be NO camp. Should weather conditions close the Y during Winter or Spring Break Camp, camp will be cancelled and parents will be notified via email.

FITNESS CLASSES, CHILDWATCH, OPEN CLIMB

  • If LAPS is closed, Child Watch will be closed since most of our staff have school age children.

LAPS DELAYED OPENING

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

  • School delays do not impact the operation of our After School programs at LAPS sites.

FITNESS CLASSES, CHILDWATCH, OPEN CLIMB

  • Child Watch (CW) –morning CW is cancelled. 
  • Fitness Classes –all morning classes held before noon are cancelled. Classes held at noon or later will be held provided the instructor can safely get to the Y. Participants are advised to call the Y (505-662-3100) or check the Y website (https://laymca.org/class-room-schedule) to be sure the class will be in session.
  • Open Climb –Open Climb cancelled until noon. Open climb held at noon or later will be held provided the monitor can safely get to the Y. You are advised to call the Y (505-662-3100) or check the Y website (https://laymca.org/class-room-schedule) prior to coming in for Open Climb.

LAPS EARLY DISMISSAL

FITNESS CLASSES, CHILDWATCH, OPEN CLIMB

  • If LAPS is dismisses early, afternoon/evening Child Watch will be closed since most of our staff have school age children.

Sports Programs and Climbing Classes

Programs Held at School Sites
If local schools are closed or dismissed early, all YMCA sports practices, games and climbing classes held at those school facilities will be cancelled.
This applies regardless of LANL operational status and aligns with school-based facility closures.  

Programs Held at the YMCA Facility

  • Sports and climbing programs held at the Y may proceed if the Y remains open and the program director has confirmed the instructor/monitor can safely travel.

  • If a class is cancelled, the program director or instructor will contact participants as early as possible via phone or email.

  • If a session is cancelled, the schedule will be updated to reflect the change.

 

Inclement weather plan – Summer Sports Camps-The Family YMCA 
Purpose

The purpose of this plan is to provide guidelines for managing inclement weather events.
 

Scope and Risk

This plan addresses four types of inclement weather which could affect Los Alamos county in the summer. The plan will also address the possibilities of smoke from wildfires. 

 

  • Rain

  • Hail

  • Lightning (Thunderstorms)

  • High Winds


Risk

The effects of the above-mentioned types of inclement weather are listed below.

Rain will make tennis courts extra slippery and this poses a liability for tennis players. It can take up to one hour for tennis courts to become completely dry and safe to play on again.

Hail can injure players and make courts extra slippery and this poses a liability for tennis players.

In case of heavy rain and hail, the County of Los Alamos, who are the owners of the fields (and courts) we are using, prohibits us from using said fields due to the slippery conditions and the risk of destroying the grass while running on it wet.

Thunderstorms contain multiple dangers that can threaten the safety of players. Lightning often strikes outside of the rain area to as much as 10 miles (even greater distances in exceptional situations).

Actions

  • If a severe weather warning is issued, all outdoor activities are canceled during the warned timeline.

  • If thunder is heard, all activities are canceled until 30 minutes after the last time thunder is heard. Campers and coaches can not consider carports, open garages, covered patios, or pavilions as adequate shelter. When lightning is in your vicinity, go quickly inside a completely closed building. If no closed building is convenient, get inside a hard-topped all-metal vehicle. Coaches are not allowed to shelter campers in their cars due to child safety protocols. Do not take shelter under a tree, especially if it is tall and isolated. If players can’t safely shelter, parents need to pick their kids up immediately. 

  • If it is raining lightly when camp has started or is about to start, wait for 30 mins to see if rain will stop. During this time, coaches are in charge of the children, and will keep them busy with sport appropriate activities until rain has stopped and it is safe to continue to play.

  • If it is raining heavily when camp has started or is about to start, please wait for 30 mins to see if rain will stop. During this time, coaches are in charge of the children, and will keep them busy with sport appropriate activities until rain has stopped and it is safe to continue to play. If rain doesn’t stop after 30 - 45 mins, all activities will be canceled for the rest of the day.

  • If there is light hail when camp has started or is about to start, wait for 30 mins to see if hail will stop. During this time, coaches are in charge of the children, and will keep them busy with sport appropriate activities until hail has stopped and it is safe to continue to play.

  • If there is heavy hail when camp has started or is about to start, please wait for 30 mins to see if hail will stop. During this time, coaches are in charge of the children, and will keep them busy with sport appropriate activities until hail has stopped and it is safe to continue to play. Air quality 

  • Excellent – All outdoor activities are open. 

  • Fair – All outdoor activities are open.

  • Moderate – The Family YMCA will keep their outdoor activities open to program members (unless coaches have to cancel due to health reasons) 

  • Low – The Family YMCA will keep their outdoor activities open to program members (unless coaches have to cancel due to health reasons)

  • Poor – All outdoor activities will be canceled

Winds

Beaufort number 0-5, Calm - Fresh Breeze - All outdoor activities are open.

Beaufort number 6 and up - All outdoor activities are canceled.

Dues & Fees
Please note: There will be no adjustments or refunds of dues for periods of closure or cancellation due to inclement weather.
